Geocache Description:

The Lockheed Martin Amateur Radio Club would like to welcome you to Field Day 2003.

Amateur Radio Field Day is an event that has been around for over 50 years. What is Field Day you ask? Well, it's an event that takes place once a year toward the end of June, this year on June 28 and 29. For 24 hours, club members will gather at the site, with the goal of making as many contacts around the world as possible. The original concept behind Field Day was to test the ability of amateurs to setup a station in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency. However, many of us like to use this time to test nontraditional methods and experiment with new ideas. Some might say we can get a little strange at times. This year, we plan to operate QRP (Low power at 5 watts) on solar power. The operating stations will include the traditional modes such as Morse Code using continuous wave (CW), Single Side-band (SSB) and FM and the nontraditional modes such as Slow Scan Television, PSK31, APRS, RTTY, Meteor scatter, Satellite operation, and we can't forget the contest to see who can fry the hotdog first on the antenna.

For geocachers wanting to visit the site, you will have a 24-hour window of opportunity. Starting at 1pm (18:00UTC) Saturday and going until 1pm (18:00UTC) Sunday, you will have the opportunity to see Amateur Radio in action. Geocachers visiting the site will receive a tour of the site and be given the chance to make a few contacts. Again this is a 24-hour event and you can arrive at anytime day or night. We ask that you do not arrive at the site before or after the event, as we will be busy either setting up or taking down the stations.

There are a number of club members who are geocachers that will be hosting the event cache, they include akap (aka kb2vqa), k5phd, kd5knr, kj5rm, Radi0chik (aka km5r), w5tcd, w5wjp, wb5qld, and wo5m.

Our goal is to expose people to the hobby of Amateur Radio, and possibly gain new operators in the process. We look forward to seeing you.

Admin note: Cache posted due to the established link between GPS use and Ham Radio, as in the forums, not to set a precedent of using this web site to promote other activities.
