Mitokondriot ovat yksi molekyylibiologian merkittävistä tutkimusalueista.
MItochondria are one of the significant research fields of molecular biology.
Mitokondriot ovat solun voimaloita, jotka myös sisältävät DNA:ta, joka voi aiheuttaa monia periytyviä sairauksia kuten esim. lihasheikkoutta, diabetesta, epilepsiaa, Parkinsonin tautia ja monia erilaisia oireyhtymiä. Tampereen yliopiston tutkimusryhmä tutkii mitokondrioita, ikääntymisen vaikutusta niihin ja mahdollisuuksia estää sairauksien periytymistä ja puhkeamista vaikuttamalla mitokondrioiden toimintaan.

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells which also carry DNA that may cause many inherited diseases like e.g. muscle weakness, diabetes, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and many different syndromes. The research group of the University of Tampere investigates mitochondria, how aging effects on them and possibilities to prevent breaking out of diseases by affecting the functioning of mitochondria.
