the Lake
Bramiana is a man - made lake that was formed by the Dam that is built there. The Dam was constructed in order to cover the need for watering the 3.000 hectares of cultivated land in the area and was finished in 1986. The waters are supplied from the areas of Selakano, Kalamafka and Malavra. It covers a total surface of 105 hectares and its water capacity reaches 15.000.000m3. Today the reservoir has evolved to the most important aquatic environment in South Greece. It seems to serve as a small compensation to several forms of life for the damages of their natural environments.
Around the lake there are pine trees, cypresses, aspens, planes and other vegetation.

It is an excellent resting place for migrant birds during the winter. The Natural History Museum of Crete has reported 214 registered species, many of which are considered endagered in many countries.
In the water and on the banks one can see ducks, wild-fowls, erodiums, gulls etc. Many predatory birds can also be spotted, such as the eagle and the duckhawk. Also partridges, turtledoves, larks, swallows. The lake also hosts various types of frogs, lizards and snakes, as well as hares and hedgehogs.
the Cache
To reach te cache you can enter the gravel road (accesible for normal cars) at wp1 and drive colckwise around the lake. You pass the Bramiana Lake cache and drive on to the entrance wp2 (here you can easely park your car). From there several paths leed after a short walk to the cache.
