Smartie Tube is placed in one of my favourite places, near Strans Gill. You can walk to this from Hubberholme. After passing the church, (go in and check out the mouse man items in church) go left at the farm and up the hill on the obvious track bearing right. The cache is a nano and is called Smartie Tube after the water worn slot directly beneath the splendid stone arch footbridge. A beautiful spot - cache not in gill. Watch out for the wild orchids!
The cache is about the walk and the views as I had to be careful with container and surroundings to get permission. The cache is placed with kind permission from National Trust and Natural England. Natural England is responsible for the management of all SSSI sites to ensure they are in Favourable or recovering condition. Strans Gill SSSI is notified for its cave system and is a site of national importance. The location is within parcel SD9178 7076 near to the bridge/footpath. This is still someway from the entrance to the pothole, so they are happy that the SSSI will not be affected. The cache location is well away from the pothole entrance to limit disturbance to the SSSI and also away from the pothole/gill/gill sides to reduce the risk of someone getting injured. For further information, the parcel (to the east of the bridge) is managed under an Agri Environment scheme to maintain the woodland habitat in good condition.
Stay on the windy path until you reach Scar House, a large Georgian farmhouse with date stone, at the top of the hill. Walk to the left of the house, then continue along the path, taking in Scar House geocache. At the back of Scar House follow the finger posts signed for Yockenthwaite until you will pass through part of Strans Wood. Notice the many ash trees growing. The cache is near to a bridge. I have visited this spot so many times on residential trips with my school, lots of children have done and still talk about their gill scramble up Strans Gill and their experience through the Smartie Tube. I love this area and have always wanted to place a cache. The cache container suits the name.
