Cave cache on Carso/Karst landscape: a hard to reach cave on the carso area near Duino. according to the locals, the cave was used as a hospital/infirmary by the Austrian soldiers during World War I. You can still see some old bottles and wood inside dating from early 1900s.
To the cave: Park infront of the old defunct Duino train station, walk straight till you get to the bridge/overpass crossing the traintracks. Follow the track till you get to see a small house just parallel on the traintracks. follow the path till you see a path that goes north. You will see a man-made stone wall around the area and look for a path that crosses it. head north till you see a large fallen dead tree. from here you are on your own, no more paths, but i suggest follow the stonewall/line. trust you GPS, be careful of thorns and sharp stones!!! if you see some patch of pinetrees then you are near the cave. some meters infront of the cave is a pile of rocks that came probably inside the cave, you will see some pieces of cavestones (mineralstones, quite different from the typical carso stones) IMPORTANT: wear good shoes as the stones are sharp. long trousers as the area is full of thorns. you might get lost and disoriented, just follow your gps signal. **following the hiking path on some maps (even from geocaching website) is not recommended as the approach from the north is very much dangerous and wild. i suggest you approach it from the south!** INSIDE THE CAVE: enter the cave, a flashlight/torch is recommended to enter the cave but not necessary. around 20meters from the entrance of the cave there is an area with an opening that lets natural light from outside. The cache is hidden here see SPOILER FOTO. cache is not hidden very high, its in a small opening near a small piece of wood. cache is behind a small loose stone. please put it back the same way you found it!! WARNING: If you want to explore the rest of the cave, be sure to have proper caving equipments. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! a few meters ahead is a very deep hole!!
