Geocache Description:

Priceless Time is no longer with us but his spirit lives on in the many rural and tree themed caches that he created. A camouflaged 600ml container with room for a few small exchanges.

Puriri trees can grow up to 20metres tall. With a trunk commonly reaching 1.5m in diameter (sometimes thicker) with a spreading crown. The bark is thin, smooth and light brown in colour but also can be very flaky. The timber had a wide range of uses with only the best trees felled leaving the gnarled and unwanted commonly found in farm paddocks and roadsides. Some flowers can be found on Puriri all year round though it does flower more in the winter. Ripe fruit can also be found year round but more common in summer making it an important food source for native birds. New Zealand’s largest moth the Puriri Moth, with a wing span of up to 150mm spends its first 5 – 6 years of its life as a grub in the trees trunk with the last 48 hours alive as a moth. The moth has also inhabited non-native species such as Eucalypts. With the advent of resin it has become fashionable to make coffee tables and other furniture out of Puriri showing the holes made by the grub.
