You are here at the border of the Waipoua Forest, the biggest remaining Kauri Forest in New Zealand.
What you see in front of you when you are looking for the cache are reconverted into native forest by the Waipoua Forest Trust. This reconversion is realised by tree planting, seed collecting and spreading, and weed controling. On your right you can see the mature kauri forest. You can see the tall kauri trees coming out from the canopy. On the left you see the pine tree plantations. They will be harvested and the land will be left to allow natural regeneration. In between the manuka trees are planted as the first stage of the kauri forest. The kauri seedlings grow under the cover of these trees.
It would be interesting to see the progress in this area by taking photo when you are looking for the cache.
These lands are managed by the Waipoua Forest Trust for some parts and by the Departement of Conservation for other parts. They are also protecting some native birds like the kokako and kiwi who have always been living in this forest but are nowadays threatened by pests invasion (possum, , mynas, ferrets, stoats, cats and dogs...)
You can help to save the native forest by volunteering at the Waipoua Forest Trust or at the Departement of Conservation all year around.
