During the second world war Tempsford was the centre of one of the country’s most secret operations. From an airfield, carefully disguised to look like a small farm, known as Gibralter Farm, two squadrons of the RAF, known as the ‘Moon Squadrons’, flew secret agents of Special Operations Executive and Secret Intelligence Service into Europe. This operation was so secret that even now not all of the history of the operations has been made public. What is known is the many agents including about a 100 women, from at least 13 countries, were ferried in and out of Europe, many were captured and of these a large number were tortured and executed as spies. In 2011 the local community decided that these women should be remembered and in December 2013 this memorial was unveiled to the public. On the memorial are recorded the names of 73 of these women (the rest are still unnamed), more information about these heroines and the memorial can be found at the web link below. http://www.tempsfordmemorial.co.uk/
Recently the local traditional memorial was moved to the same location giving a tribute to those from this village that lost their lives in the world wars
As a tribute to these ladies you will have to visit the memorial and supporting notice boards and work through the puzzle
