New Cumberland, WV, located on a bend in the Ohio River that became known by rivermen as the "Brickyard Bend," was the brick capital of the United States from about 1840 to 1910. Brick, tile, and sewer pipe were made near New Cumberland. Crockery ware and pottery products were manufactured in East Liverpool, OH. Paving blocks and bricks were traded with cities and towns on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers as far as New Orleans.
