This cache is part of the WA series celebrating our early explorers and pioneers. This is one of 12 caches spread throughout the south of WA. There is a clue placed inside this cache in the form of a letter and a number that you will need as it will be used to find the two bonus caches for this series.
The cache is an ammo box in the Hassell Reserve, with a few swaps to get it started.
This geo-cache is in memory of John Hassell who arrived in Albany as a pioneer in 1840. He proceeded to buy up land around the Hay river in 1843("Yeolup") and in Kendenup in 1845("Mollialup"), in 1848 he was granted land in Kojonup("Nindiup"), land was also granted to John in other areas around Kojonup and around Katanning, he then turned his attention to Jarramungup in 1849, in total he was using approx. 60,000 acres of land by 1850 and was the largest grazier in the southern districts. By 1860 he had increased his freehold and leasehold lands to 100,000 acres and expanded to 350,000 by 1864. This land was mostly used for sheep and the production of wool which was sold to markets in England.
