Little Giant
Ursus americanus is the smallest, but most widely distributed of any bear in North America. Adult males weigh between 150-550 pounds with the largest reaching upwards of 600 pounds. Females are typically about 33% smaller than their male counterparts, weighing in on average from 90-375 pounds.
Forager
Black bears are omnivores, feeding on plants, fruits, nuts, bugs, honey, salmon, small mammals, and carrion. Many human encounters are driven by this foraging behavior as black bears gravitate toward unsecured garbage, bird feeders, farm crops, beehives, and outdoor pet food.
Make Some Noise
Black bears are nervous and easily frightened. The best way to avoid a potentially dangerous encounter is to make noise when traversing their habitats. Wear bells, clap your hands, and call out frequently. The noise will warn the bear of your approach, providing an opportunity for them to avoid you.
