The old school gate?
There was once a school at this site; the occupants of the nearest house told us it was already gone when they moved to the area 45yrs ago. There are only a couple of old sheds here now and the land belongs to the council. We let the neighbours know we were placing a cache and to expect more visitors at the intersection; apparently lots of people stop there already to check their phones as there's no reception while driving through the Maramarua forest area. Please make sure you're not seen retrieving or replacing the cache, and leave it well-hidden. We recommend you come prepared to CITO (we did).There is plenty of room to pull off the road safely.
We found a little information online:
"The school closed at the end of 1968 when it was merged with Waerenga School. Ron Hooks who was Head Master at Okaeria went to Waerenga. In 1970 the F1-7 college opened at Te Kauwhata."
If anyone knows more of the history of Okaeria we would be interested to hear it.
