Arguably, the most famous entertainer of all time was the magician and escapologist Harry Houdini.

But did you know that he once stayed in Hartington Street?

Houdini came to Barrow before the first world war in January 1914. The Shipwrights ,employees of Vickers Limited at the time, challenged Houdini to escape from a container they had constructed for him. This is a photo of the Public Notice of that challenge.

At that time there were many theatrical boarding houses in and around Barrow. Houdini stayed at a very popular one in Hartington Street.

More than 80 years after his death, Harry Houdini is still regarded as one of the best magicians and escapologists who ever lived.

Parking can be found on Hartington Street. 1 Hour only for non residents.

Congratulations to Amphourous on FTF
