Geocache Description:

Tribute cache for one of the Geocaching Pioneers in Hawai'i - CRider.
Halawa Ridge Summit

The cache is located at the end of the Halawa Ridge Trail over looking Ha'iku Valley and the H-3 freeway windward. The current condition and accessibility of the Halawa Ridge Trail is uncertain (I have heard that it is closed and hasn't been maintained for quite some time) and I would recommend approaching this cache by crossing over from either the 'Aiea Ridge Trail or the Godek-Jaszkulski Trail. There are many other caches that will keep you busy along the way (no matter which way you choose ). Please remember that crossing the Ko'olau Summit Trail (KST) is very dangerous business and one misstep is all it takes to end up in a very very bad situation.

The Cache Description from the Original CRider Cache (GC171GB - You've Been Lei'd at the Halawa Ridge Summit) that was located here:

The cache is located at the end of the Halawa Ridge Trail over looking Ha'iku Valley and the H-3 freeway windward. It is a Graded trail, but just over 6 miles in length ONE WAY! There is a small cable car at the stream crossing DO NOT TAKE IT or we may loose our access to the trail.

The Halawa Ridge Trail is a beautiful contoured trail the reaches a "low back" on the Ko'olau Mountain summit over looking Ha'iku Valley. The trail head is at just to the left of the Board of Water Supply's Halawa Xeroscape Garden. Coordinates are : N21 22.881 W 157 54.332. The trail follows the outside of their fence, crosses Halawa Stream, scurrys under the H-3 Freeway and then climbs to the top of Halawa Ridge. The climb to the ridge top is the hardest part of the trail.

There you will find yourself on an old jeep road which ends about 1/2 mile farther up the ridge. The Halawa Trail begins there at a U. S. Geological Survay marker. Now there are only 5 miles to go.

On a clear day the view from the summit is fantastic. The trail was cleared last on October 28th 2007. As the trail is "contoured" it not really a hard trail, just a long one. The last mile or two have some areas where the trail gets a bit narrow and there is always the danger of slipping off the trail and tumbling a long way down. Do not cache alone. Plan to start early, it should take you about 4 hours to reach the summit from where you park.

There is a bench mark at the "upper trail head" (end of the jeep road).

Now for the cache: It is a clear blue REI 500ml bottle tied (with pink string) to the base of a tree at the summit. It should be easy to find (fingers crossed ).
