It’s little wonder that this stretch of Highway 1 is typically listed at the top in world class scenic drives. Think about it. From Cambria you can wind your way up the Central Coast, along some of the most iconic, most (hold tight onto that grab handle) breathtaking, picturesque ocean vistas you can imagine, and (except for roadwork) not encounter so much as a stop sign all the way to Carmel.
My connection with this road goes back to my hitchhiking days. It was the early seventies and I was thumbing outside of Vegas when I got a long ride with a French tourist who was sightseeing his way through Nevada and California. After visiting Yosemite we next headed to San Francisc before turning in the direction of Monterey, Big Sur and points south. What an experience! I was hooked. In the intervening years I couldn’t hazard a guess as to how many times my lovely wife and I have traveled this magnificent ribbon of highway. But what I can tell you is it never ceases to evoke a sense of awe, and pure joy.
