The Word 'Briar' is taken from the Latin word 'brucus' which means Heather this would indicate that the Hill would have been covered by small trees with hard, woody roots.
Briar Hill has claimed to be one of the first settlement in Northampton, with evidence of the first settlers in the area around the Neolithic Period 3500BC. Before the current housing estate was built in the 1970's, an Archaeological survey was carried out. The hillside was excavated revealing a number of artefacts dating back to this period confirming Briar Hills claims.

The modern housing estate was built on farmland and was part of the redevelopment and expansion of Northampton under the new town development. The estate once had a Pub called the Double Four located round the corner by the roundabout. This was replaced in 2013 by a row of modern houses.
In 1980 the second stage of the Briar Hill development was undertaken, building homes that where different to the traditional layout. These 3 bed upside down houses have two bed rooms and kitchen on the ground floor, whilst the living room, master bed room and bathroom are on the first floor.
