Santa Rosa is named after St. Rose of Lima, a maiden who became the first canonized saint of the New World. This same maiden was also the patroness of the 18th century pueblo church in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
Just west of the Pecos River, this abandoned cemetery was formerly called Rose of Lima Chapel and Cemetery. It was first used in the early 1800s. The chapel within the cemetery was built by Don Celso Baca in 1890, in honor of his mother who is buried beneath these existing ruins.
The Santa Rosa post office was established in 1873.
This cache is placed as a tribute to the pioneers and setlers of the Santa Rosa area. We solicit your volunteer efforts as a cacher to place one at or near a cemetery of your choice.
