Ryan Newman was brought in as the 2nd car of Stewart-Haas' operation in 2009. On November 1, 2009, at the Amp Energy 500 atTalladega Superspeedway, Newman was involved in a heavy crash on the back stretch in which he flipped over on top of Kevin Harvick entering Turn 3. He ended up on his roof, and because the roof was crushed, crews had to use the Jaws of Life to pry the roof off the car after NASCAR officials flipped it back over. Newman was unharmed. 

When Newman won the Subway Fresh Fit 600(k) at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, April 10, 2010, it was the first Sprint Cup win ever for a car number 39, being the 103rd different car number that has won in the Cup series.

Newman left SHR at the end of the 2013 season to drive the #31 RCR car, replacing Jeff Burton. The car was renumbered #4 for Kevin Harvick.
