The cache will take you to Albert Capsouto Park, a small and quite lovely oasis in a heavily trafficked area right below Canal Street. In fact, a centerpiece of the park is a 114-foot long fountain that spills water from an 8-foot tower, evoking the canal that once flowed through Canal Street during the early 19th Century from the Hudson River to the notorious slums of the Five Points. The fountain received an award for Excellence in Design from the New York City Public Design Commission. The Park is a graceful transition at that point where SoHo ends and TriBeCa begins, and it offers a clear and unobstructed view of the World Trade Center tower.
The Park was established in 2008 under the name CaVaLa Park (as it is bounded by Canal, Varick and Laight Streets), however it was later renamed Albert Capsouto Park in honor of a pioneering restaurateur and advocate for small businesses and the revitalization of lower Manhattan after September 11th. Capsouto and his two brothers opened their (now closed) restaurant Capsouto Freres in 1980 before TriBeCa was the hotspot it is today. On 9/11 children from P.S. 234 on Greenwich Street fled from the WTC collapse north towards Capsouto Freres, where Capsouto welcomed them with food and comfort. Subsequently Capsouto and his brothers kept the restaurant open to serve rescue workers and offer a place of respite to them. The Park was officially dedicated and renamed after Capsouto in 2010, the same year as his death. At the dedication ceremony, his brother Sammy reportedly “gazed up at the clear sky and addressed Albert directly, "Your friends are here," Sammy said. "Your family is here. Your colleagues are here. Everybody you touched is here. The only thing I can really say to you is as a brother: Albert, you did good."
My Sammy tips his paw to Sammy, and to Albert.
Please be mindful that the Park is surrounded by a great deal of traffic on all sides going in many different directions, as well as heavy tunnel traffic. When I am in this area I am always cautious and remember what my father taught me, always look both ways and only cross on the green:)
