This cache has been placed at close to an old fishing spot of mine. When I was much younger this was the start of the Bunbury Timber jetty. Constructed in 1864 using convict labour the jetty eventually measured over 1.6km long. In fact where breakwater where the cache is located was originally part of the jetty. In the early 1970's the section from the cache location back to Koombana bay was demolished and a breakwater/causeway constructed to provide access. Gradual degradation of the jetty and a large fire in the 90's spelt the end of the structure which was finally demolished in 2013 due to increasing concerns over it's structural integrity and timbers breaking off and creating a navigation hazard to small boats.
The cache is located at an old crane that ran on railway line up and down the jetty. The crane and steam trains travelled up and down the jetty on rails to service the shipping. By the time I came on the scene, fishing and crabbing from the jetty where it's main use with the inner and outer harbour taking over the shipping. I recall many times climbing to the top of this crane but I could never make it to the top of the lighting towers which were situated along the jetty. I wouldn't recommend climbing the crane now days. Many a cold winter morning (the best time for crabs from the jetty) were spent sheltering in the derelict buildings out towards the half way point.
