Edward Hills' Cottage and Well
Sergeant Edward Hills was a Fencible soldier-settler, who came to Auckland from England in November 1847, on the "Sir George Seymour" with the first European settlers to Howick.
He was the school master at the Howick Church of England School and lived with his wife Sarah in a cottage on this one acre allotment.
This well was near his cottage and was so narrow it could not have been dug by an adult, possibly it was dug by a child attending his school. Edward Hills was a popular teacher amongst his pupils and their parents.
Sergeants were often teachers as they could read, write and keep military records for military officers.
