Geocache Description:

This mystery cache is all about King Duncan whose "well" lies not too far away from here.

King Duncan is a well known scottish king due mostly to Shakespeare's "Macbeth".  However, in the play a lot of the details are completely untrue which we can say was artistic licence or was, more probably, down to the fact that he was trying to please King James I (VI of Scotland) at the time of writing.  King James loved anything to do with witches and was related to Banquo so one was included and the other portrayed as a good person.  Banquo, according to historians, was in actual fact more likely to have been the person who not only plotted with MacBeth to kill Duncan but some people say he was the person who actually murdered him.

In the play King Duncan was old, wise and steady and was murderd in his sleep.  In truth he was young, weak and a very inscrutable person who was killed in battle.  Macbeth was protrayed as the evil man along with a very manipulative wife who had no rights to the throne when he had as much right as Duncan and was probably not as evil as or power hungry as Duncan proved to be.  The play is set over one year but actually Macbeth ruled quite peacefully for seventeen years.

So you see there are many historical untruths in Shakespeare's play but without it would we know who King Duncan, Banquo and MacBeth were today.  And can you name any other scottish kings that were before or after their time other than King James?  Fact or fiction Shakespeare's play has been a huge part in keeping scottish history alive today.

The cache is not at the published coordinates.

To find the cache answer the following questions and follow the instructions below.

A=  take the number of letters in the place (two words) in Perthshire where Shakespeare said Duncan and Macbeth battled and times it by the number of letters in the town nearest to where he actually died, and was buried before being moved to the Isle of Iona.

B= Duncan succeeded King Malcolm to the throne, but which one?

Northings = published coordinates plus A minus B

C= the last two digits in the year King Duncan was unsuccessful in the seige of Durham.
