CACHING IN ON THE TOUR DE FRANCE
To celebrate Stage 2 of the Yorkshire Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014 finishing in Sheffield on Sunday 6 July, here is a selection of caches, mostly “cache and dashes” for which you will need two or four wheels, along the route of the race through High Bradfield, Worrall, Oughtibridge and Grenoside. All are placed with easy parking nearby, but don’t expect to find them on the day of the race as the roads will be closed to traffic all day.
LE TOUR CARAVAN
The Tour changed in 1930 to a competition largely between teams representing their countries rather than the companies that sponsored them. The costs of accommodating riders fell to the organisers instead of the sponsors. The money was raised by allowing advertisers to precede the race. (Source: Wikipedia)
“The Caravan is a terrific spectacle and a great family attraction. A procession of elaborate floats and vehicles precedes the racing action, 180 in all distributing 15 million items to fans at the roadside across the 3 weeks of the Tour.” (Source: The official site for the Tour de France Grand Départ 2014)
