Geocache Description:

This road takes its name from the history of the airport works, The airfield was developed by Rochester council and the Shorts Brothers in 1933, the first airplane built at Rochester was a Scylla in 1934 and the first airplane to fly into Rochester was a Short Scion flown from Gravesend (G-ACJI). The first private flyer at the airfield was Miss Gladys Batchelor who at the time was the youngest woman to hold a pilot’s licence.

After changing hands a few times William Elliott took over the factory and built a lot of what can be seen today between 1795 and 1968. In 1968 there was a takeover by GEC and in 1969 Marconi-Elliott avionics was formed.

More data on the airfield can be obtained from the Royal Aeronautical Society Medway Branch.

This cache is a small magnetic cache located half way along Marconi way. Close to the exit from the park and ride and hockey club. There are plans to build a new fire station on the park and ride. This area is used by a lot of people so please take care not to show this cache location.

NB, replacement cache, please make sure it is secure when replaced. PARK AND RIDE IS NOW CLOSED Congratulations to GLAMPERS_UK for FTF
