Moscopas Pond Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mushnikas: This one had to be moved twice which kind of ruined it, so I'll just archive. Too bad, because I liked about the history on this one. The only thing that put this area on the map is that Indians came as far as Montauk to get water this clean. Thanks to all that found it. (Sorry MM)

Geocache Description:

If you follow the elevation of Mount Misery down and to the south, you eventually come to the site of Moscopas, once considered a sacred swamp. In a land deed for the Bethpage Purchase, dated 1695 transferring ownership of the area to Thomas Powell, and signed by, among others, Sowwamacus, Moscopas is described as a “hole of dirt and water.”

It’s also worth noting that native Americans at the time didn’t consider the concept of owning land to be the same as what the white people did. To them, it was more like renting, allowing them the use of the land, along with the native Americans, and also meant that the colonists would assist them in their defense, if necessary. This deed spells out that the native Americans reserve the “liberty of hunting and gathering huckleberries. If you want to read all the historical details about this sacred spot of water that Indians traveled to from as far as Montauk to visit, read the info on the sister cache, located on the opposite corner called “Manattto Hill”

These two caches are connected because this is the route that water flowed hundreds of years ago starting at this spot. From this sacred pond site a river ran towards my Manattto cache and then south, winding all the way to the Great South Bay. The pond and river were plowed under, of course, to make way for the Middle School, the athletic field, businesses, housing, etc..

Directions: Cache is near the intersection of Manetto Hill Rd and Washington Ave in Plainview, (just north of Old Country Road) You will see a small strip mall there. There is a bank just south of these stores that has parking spots. (This is the 2nd time cache had to be moved, so location is not as good as it originally was...cache is fragile … be gentle & put back as you found it. Cache is a hidden, small bison tube.)
