Geocache Description:

Commemorating the bygone Malibu Castle Golf 'Family Adventure Center' (Mini-Golf Course and Arcade)

Congrats to happycrazyrobot on the FTF!

This cache is located pretty near dead on at the location of the iconic Windmill of the Malibu Castle Mini-Golf Course and Arcade, which you could see from the 405 until it came down, along w/ the old castle, long since gone.

Since the hotel property JUST opened, I figured I'd use some 'historic imagery' on Google Earth to pinpoint the location of a few other old icons here, like the Tiki Hut and the Temple, for anyone who just wants to remember.

Personally, I didn't grow up here myself, but seeing it from the freeway it always reminded me of the favorite mini-golf course in my hometown, with its ubiquitous windmill...who NEVER had trouble with the windmill?!?  At least in my home course, the blades of the windmill turn right in front of the ball to block the shot!  Did these as well?  I'd love to hear some stories from locals when you log this - I'm going from sat photos and online descriptions of the park after it had closed.  Did I get the names of the Tiki Hut and Temple correct?

Take a look at the other (completely optional) waypoints if you want to walk around and see where things used to be, and I captured a few photos from my searches.  Note: You can get CLOSE to where the Temple was, but it's in a hotel room now! But you can still get to the locations of the Tiki Hut and the Castle Gates. ;)

Windmill, Temple, & Tiki Hut:

The Castle Gates:

If you want to see some history yourself, open up Google Earth (not Google Maps, but the Google Earth app), and under View select 'Historical Imagery', and you can use the slider bar that pops up to go back in time pretty much anywhere.  ;)

The entire complex in November 2003:

The cache itself is a very simple hide, in a fairly unbusy spot, but as you may not have much reason to be back there on that little landscaped sidewalk behind the hotel, try to look like a guest on a walk!  ;)
