Geocache Description:

Across the road stands two white gate pillars, the entrance to The old rectory, now known as The Glebe.  On the 3rd December 1941 The  rectory was unoccupied, due to the Rectors failing heath he had moved to Bexhill. A local builder was sent to check the lagging on the pipes and was later found unconscious at the foot of the stairs with a bad head injury by an employee who had been sent by his wife to see why he hadnt returned home, he later died from his injury.  At the inquest after listening to all the evidence the coroner stated  " on the evidence before me  my verdict can only be that the deceased was found at the foot of the stairs with a fracture of the skull, there being no evidence to show how the injury was caused , I don't believe he had fallen".The deceased was a well respected tradesman in lydd and there was great speculation as to how he met his death. Earlier in the day two men passing by had reported seeing a man in the rectory gateway who quickly vanished into the bushes, this after  another report earlier of a dinghy having been found half hidden on the coast between Dungeness and Dengemarsh. Local people thought he had disturbed an intruder, and due to the capture of spies the previous year german agents were regarded as the  main suspects. Even today this mysterious death is still debated in Lydd.
