Lieutenant Edmund De Wind(1883-1918) Edmund De Wind was born in County down in Ireland in 1883, emigrated to Canada in 1910. He joined the 31st Battalion , CEF as a private in 1914 and arrived in France in September 1915. He saw action on the Somme and at Vimy Ridge. On March 21st 1918 at Racecourse Redoubt near Grougies France, he held this important position with only 2 NCO's for seven hours, though twice wounded, until another section could be sent to help him. On 2 occasions he got out on top of his trench, under heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and cleared the enemy from the position, killing many of them. He continued to repel enemy attacks until he was mortally wounded and collapsed.

Lieutenant Edmund De Wind was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.

Mount De Wind in Alberta is named in his honour.
