Geocache Description:

FTF - Arrowhead in honor of the Trail of Tears

Home of the “Blue Devils,” Buffington Elementary school was opened to replace the aging Avery Elementary School in the mid 1900's.  It remained in operation until about 2007 when the new Avery Elementary School was opened.  At that time, Cherokee County Parks and Recreation took over the former school parks and opened to the public for use. Namesake comes from Fort Buffington, involved with the Trail of Tears.

Buffington Elementary took the community’s name which came from Fort Buffington.  Fort Buffington was built in the 1830′s by local militia. It was one of about 25 stockades in the Cherokee Indian Nation used by Federal and State troops during the Cherokee Removal in 1838. In May and June 1838, 7,000 soldiers forced over 15,000 Cherokee Indians from their homes and held them before beginning the Trail of Tears in 1838.  After this time, Fort Buffington was either dismantled or fell into ruin, and only a state historical marker remains at the site of the former Buffington Elementary School.
