2014 brings the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. At the time it was considered to be the war to end all wars. It resulted in such a loss of life that villages and towns across Britain began erecting War Memorials, mostly funded by local patronage, to honour the Remembrance of those local lads and men who did not come home.
Most of these memorials also reflect the sacrifice laid down by local men in the Second World War, and some include the names of those who gave their lives in other conflicts.
This National monument honours those cyclist messengers who paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst serving their country.
Please take a few moments to reflect upon the significance of this Memorial.
