One of the Frost Giants of Norse myth. He lived at the same time as the primordial Ymir.
When Ymir was slain his blood oozed out and formed oceans. This flooded the land of the Frost Giants but Bergelmir managed to escape the flood with his wife on a huge boat which he had built. From him and his wife descended a new race of Frost Giants who sought revenge on the gods for killing Ymir and their ancestors.
