The bowls club was destroyed including the shades and the greens. The shopping centre parking shades and a wall of the building were damaged. Two more houses near the lights were destroyed as the tornado travelled across farm land towards the Hummock. On the way several farm buildings were demolished.
This avenue of pines were planted in 1953 in memory of a husband and wife burnt to death in a cane fire.. This story is told on a plaque along the pathway.
As you look across to the road you will see a small tree. This is the replacement for one of the two uprooted. To the right if you look up you will see two trees broken off towards the top. The second uprooted tree was a little further towards the Bargara shops. There is also a small replacement tree there.
One of the uprooted trees fell across a vehicle travelling past. The two occupants were trapped in it for a considerable time but by some miracle they suffered only minor injuries and were out of hospital the next day..
Some of the houses are still being repaired or rebuilt. Following this day we had the record floods when our beach was littered with wrecked boats but that is another story.
I have posted several pictures of the devestation caused.
