Geocache Description:

This is a puzzle cache based on the aircraft caches around RNZAF Base Ohakea, not new Zealand's capital city. The cache is not at the posted co-ordinates although there is a nice photo opportunity there. Based on the fact the Wellingtons never arrived at RNZAF Base Ohakea you will need to find the numbers below to locate the cache.

Cache is small so BYOP.

In 1927 Ohakea was picked as a suitable site for an Airship base. Plans change and in the 1930s RNZAF Base Ohakea became a base for bombers, specifically 30 new Vickers Wellingtons on order from the UK. The two large arched hangars that highlight Ohakea on the horizon were built for this purpose, however with the outbreak of World War Two the 30 Wellingtons were donated back to the RAF to be flown by New Zealanders in 75 (NZ) Squadron.

The Wellington was a twin engined, long range, medium bomber. One of the most notable incidents involving an RNZAF Wellington is that of Sergeant James Allen Ward VC;

Returning from a night mission over Germany the Wellington was attacked by a Luftwaffe BF-110, this caused a fuel leak and subsequent fire on the starboard side. SGT Ward was sent out on to the wing into the freezing airstream to smother the fire. He acheived this before returning to the relative safety of the fuselage.

SGT Ward received the VC for this action and was summoned to 10 Downing Street by Winston Churchill, who held Ward with some regard. it's said that upon meeting SGT Ward Churchill said "You must feel very humble and awkward in my presence." Ward replied "Yes, sir" to which Churchill said "Then you can imagine how humble and awkward I feel in yours".
