The original two- room house was purchased in 1928 by Oral Wallace,a local fiddler/one man band. He was the grandfather of the current resident Keith Holt. When highway 68 was paved in 1932, Wallace set up his roadside outbuilding as a fried chicken shack and a room to rent for travelers. Then in 1939, the building was converted to a Gulf station and bus stop. Wallace started selling cold soft drinks and apple cider there in 1944, which is where Apple Valley got its name. Wallace became a mail carrier in Elva, Marshall County, where he would sell cider, and some say moonshine along his route. In 1964, the Gulf station was removed, and the property pretty much abandoned. In 2004, Holt, a former puppeteer and actor returned to his former home and began creating Toyland and the Hillbilly Garden..Toyland contains over 3000 toys and Hillbilly art is scattered about the property..Cache is kid friendly, with parking availible in front of the home..Please do not park on the highway, and cache in "daylight" hours only. Congrats to Debbie Sellers and peacharino for the FTF..
