A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that differs from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests. "Erratics" take their name from the Latin word errare, and are carried by glacial ice, often over distances of hundreds of kilometres. Erratics can range in size from pebbles to large boulders. This erratic is located in Tunstall park.
I came across this erratic whilst in the park looking for JnK Fox's Tunstall cache http://coord.info/GC50AKT. I've seen several of these as earth caches before, and were it not for caching I'd have no idea about them, what they are etc. Instead, as soon as I saw it, I knew what it was.
The erratic in Tunstall park came from the Lake District previously, and a geological event caused it to end up in Stoke on Trent.
To log the cache, please send me an email with your answers to the following questions (you don't need to wait for a reply to log, but if your answers are really out I will contact you back). Logs without an email will be deleted.
- Estimate the height, and perimiter of the rock
- Describe the texture of the rock
- Approximately how long ago was the erratic formed?
- How did it end up in Tunstall?
- Optional extra - post a pic of yourself / your GPS at GZ
