Geocache Description:

The cache is actually located at the intersection due to a previously placed cache at Kingston Cemetery just up the road. Friends own the land and old school building. They have requested that you look only from the road. The school, although still standing, is in great despair, with the roof falling in.

This is the fifth in our new series, "The Old Schoolhouses of Decatur County." Our inspiration for this series came from an old book picked up at an antique shop about the history of schools in Decatur County from 1820 - 1978. It was an incredible project by the Rural Couples Club to celebrate the Bicentennial Year of the U.S.A. (1776-1976) Added inspiration for our geocaching series comes from one of the Hoosierdogs being a teacher in the Greensburg Schools. The inspiration for the series name comes from the poem, "The Old Schoolhouse" by John Greenleaf Whittier.

Still sits the schoolhouse by the road,
A ragged beggar sunning;
Around it still the sumacs grow,
And blackberry vines are running.

Within, the master's desk is seen,
Deep scarred by raps official;
The warping floor, the battered seats.
The jack-knife's carved initial;

The charcoal frescoes on its wall;
It's door's worn sill, betraying
The feet that creeping slow to school
Went storming out to playing!

During the winter of 1943, the boiler of Kingston School stopped working. A new boiler was out of financial range for the school. The elementary kids were sent to Clarksburg School, while the older grades were sent to Greensburg. The cast iron boiler was broken down and given to the government to assist in the war effort! desks and chalkboards were removed. For awhile, the school was used in the warm months as a community center, but that was short lived. My friend's dad bought the land thinking he would make a shop out of the school. That never unfolded and today the school stands in a sad deterioting state. Notice the May pole still standing at the front of the school.
