This search will bring you along the trail southeast of Alexander Lake in Panola Mountain State Park. The cache is located just off the Rockdale River Trail. Enjoy the scenery as you hike or bike these trails.

The Rockdale River Trail can be strenuous at times, so be sure to carry plenty of water. Please re-hide the cache carefully so others can enjoy the experience as well.

The large rocks along the Rockdale River Trail are part of Panola Mountain State Park’s fascinating geological landscape. Panola Mountain itself is a 100-acre granite outcrop that rises more than 260 feet above the South River and is recognized as a National Natural Landmark.

As you explore the Rockdale River Trail, you will encounter exposed rock faces, boulders, and granite formations that reveal the area’s deep geological history. These features were shaped by natural forces over millions of years, offering a close-up look at the processes that formed the Piedmont region.

For those interested in learning more, the park offers the Outcrop Trail, a 0.75-mile loop that leads to an overlook with expansive views of Panola Mountain and the surrounding landscape. Interpretive signage along the trail explains the geological processes and highlights the unique ecosystems found on the granite outcrop.

To help protect this delicate environment, guided hikes to the summit of Panola Mountain are available by reservation. These guided experiences provide deeper insight into the rare plants, wildlife, and geological significance of the area. Exploring the Rockdale River Trail offers a meaningful connection to both the natural beauty and ancient history of Panola Mountain State Park.
