Geocache Description:

Zack wanted to place a special Flag Day cache. Hopefully, this cache will help you learn more about Flag Day and the flag of the United States of America.

Flag Day is celebrated in the United States on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States of America on June 14, 1777.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. It is not an official federal holiday. Pennsylvania became the first US State to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday in 1937. New York designates the second Sunday in June as Flag Day, a state holiday. The oldest continuing Flag Day parade is in Fairfield, Washington. Fairfield began parades in 1909 or 1910 and has continued them every year since (a possible exception of 1918). Fairfield celebrated the "Centennial" parade in 2010. The largest Flag Day parade is held annually in Troy, New York and it usually draws around 50,000 spectators.

Today the flag of the United States of America consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice. These are all wonderful quailities we should strive to have.

Zack loves geocaching, especially trading items in caches. His number one birthday wish was to hide a geocache. This cache is stocked with many trade items, some for all ages, and many of them originally started as red, white, or blue to celebrate Flag Day.

Update 2/4/16 Trying a smaller replacement container hoping it will be able to last a bit longer. You are now looking for a small, round, black container. Container will hold smaller swag and travel bugs. Should be a park and grab, but beware of local muggles. Please re-hide well to preserve cache for others.
