This homestead was the home of one of the historic Flat Rock community’s leaders. Built in 1917, this house and the surrounding homestead (including a barn and various other outbuildings) are a central part of the history of Flat Rock. Following the Civil War, many African-Americans fled the South in search of better lives in the North – but not all. In Flat Rock, T. A. Bryant, Sr. and other leaders wanted to keep the community together. Bryant, Sr. was pivotal in this effort; he bought the land on which the Bryant Homestead now sits and distributed parcels to other families. Land ownership gave people a stake in the South, allowing them to build a community in rural Georgia.
Today, the T. A. Bryant House and Homestead are a critical part of the history of Flat Rock. The House is home to the Flat Rock Archives, which works to preserve and promote the history of Flat Rock. The Bryant homestead was donated by Rev. T.A. Bryant, Jr. as a means to preserve the African American experience and educate visitors of the importance and perseverance of this community.
The site offers a guided tour through DeKalb County’s history, a story of resilience and ingenuity that stretches from before the Civil War to the present day.

This nature preserve, like other Georgia woodlands, has ticks during all but the winter season. Take precautions that include wearing a hat, a long sleeve shirt, and long pants with legs tucked into socks. Wear light colored clothing for ease of spotting ticks, especially deer ticks that are the size of a pin head. Use bug spray with the chemical DEET and especially spray around the ankle area.
