This cache is part of a series called the “Prairie Storms Adventure Trail” developed by Living Skies 2014 MEGA Event volunteers. Enjoy the hidden secrets of Southern Saskatchewan by getting off the beaten trail to sites seldom visited, scenic views, historic sites and buildings. The name also pays tribute to the Alberta's “Prairie Winds Adventure Trail” which was created for the Best of the Bad (WestCan 1) MEGA event in 2011.
This series will also take you along the Red Coat Trail, which is a 1,300 km route through southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta taken in 1874 by the North-West Mounted Police in their quest to bring law and order to the Canadian West. In Saskatchewan, Highway 13 is designated as Red Coat Trail.
Saskatchewan once was noted to have more "golf courses per capita" than anyplace else. Also, Saskatchewan was noted for most golf courses with sand-greens.
The sand-green courses, which date back to the troubled economic times and harsh weather of the1920s and 1930s, are slowly disappearing in Saskatchewan. Grass greens have become more affordable and easier to build and maintain. In his book “Ninety years of golf”, author Mickey Boyle listed that in 1987, 132 courses were sand greens. Author Sandra Bingman, who wrote "Breaking 100: A Century of Women's Golf in Saskatchewan," said most of the early rural courses used sand greens because there was no reliable water supply with which to grow grass. However, not all sand-green golf courses are blowing away. About 60 continue to be enjoyed by golfers in Saskatchewan.
