Geocache Description:

I love coming up here to sit down and enjoy the solitude, watch the manic drivers to the east on the A73, the many different train companies operating on the west coast main line to the west, and up above is an air lane. I normally go up to the highest point, but this cache is a little lower for minimum cache separation reasons. When setting the cache, I looked upwards and 2 skylarks were skylarking about and making their distinctive call.

I think that it's worth going up the short distance to the highest point for the all-round view.

The bing was largely removed some years ago and grassed over. Sometimes there are a few cattle in this area, but mostly it's deserted.

There are no paths to this cache. If you take an unfortunate route, it can be a bit boggy at the start. You can hop over the steel gate (waypoint SG1) or follow the old waggonway behind Lanarkshire's Coastal Defences, an indistinct track that turns into a badger trail and passes an easy fence crossing point C3.

Records show that coal has been worked around here from as far back as 1650. Ironstone was also wrought for a considerable time during 19th century by the Coltness Iron Company and the Shotts Iron Company. Castlehill #6 Colliery (this one) was opened by the Shotts Iron Company Ltd in 1916 and closed in 1954. The shaft was only 91 metres deep, which explains why some householders in Carluke used to be able to hear the shot-firers in action.

You may need tweezers and BYOP.
