Geocache Description:

Information about this Series

The HMAS cache series has been created by Cankid and Delta Response Team to celebrate the 2013 fleet review and this is 58 of 101 caches. The series features 53 ships, 11 bases, 20 knighted seamen, 5 engagements and 1 cache about the RAN. There are also 9 puzzles for each section of the series, with one final cache. There is also one extra for the enthusiasts out there. The series can be done in a day and is best done in order. The best mode of transport in doing this series is bike.

The Location

The series is located just off Coppins Crossing road and continues through an area quite close to the arboretum. Park at the parking coordinates as provided in the first cache and continue from there. Please show caution and do not obscure the gate. This series will take almost all day so plan ahead, take water and snacks for the trip. As said previously, it is best done by bike. Most of the caches are on fire trails but there are some where you will have to go off track to find them.

Listed on the National Register as a significant heritage site, a quarter of HMAS Creswell's buildings are heritage listed. The establishment is surrounded by Booderee National Park and sits on the shore of Jervis Bay Marine Park. Navy and HMAS Creswell inhabitants have done much work over many years to ensure current and future generations can enjoy the location's pristine beauty.

Parliament selected the site of Captain's Point, Jervis Bay, for the Royal Australian Naval College (RANC) in November 1911. This site is the cradle of our Navy. Construction of the main college buildings was completed in 1915 and the first two entries of cadet midshipmen moved from the temporary college at Geelong in February 1915. The first graduation in 1916 included Midshipmen Collins and Farncomb, both of whom later gained flag rank.

Funding cuts driven by the Great Depression forced the closure of the in 1930, which then relocated to Flinders Naval Depot (HMAS Cerberus). The buildings were leased as hotels and guesthouses, although Navy retained use of the waterfront and some married quarters. From 1944 to 1946 the RAAF 2nd Military Rehabilitation Unit was housed in some of the college buildings.

From the early 1950s it became clear that Flinders Naval Depot was becoming overcrowded and in 1956, the government decided to return the RANC to its original site. This was achieved in January 1958 and the site was commissioned as HMAS Creswell, after VADM Sir William Creswell, KCMG, KBE, the First Naval Member of the Naval Board (Chief of Navy) from 1911 to 1919.

In 1987, the Staff Training School was established at HMAS Creswell. Now known as the Advanced Leadership and Management Faculty (ALMF), the school conducts the Junior Officer Leadership, Management and Strategic Studies courses, and both phases of the Senior Sailor Advanced Staff Skills course. In 1993, the RAN School of Survivability and Ship's Safety was relocated to Jervis Bay and HMAS Creswell became the lead establishment for firefighting, damage control, and nuclear, biological and chemical defence training.

Navy's Lead Authority for Leadership and Management training was established at HMAS Creswell in January 1998. The Commanding Officer, as Lead Authority, is responsible for Navy's leadership, management and Phase One Training undertaken at the RANC, Phase Two - Four Training; Initial Training Faculty (HMAS Cerberus); and the Leadership Management Schools at Training Centres East and West.

In addition to these training roles, the Commanding Officer is the Superintendent of Naval Waters for Jervis Bay, and HMAS Creswell supports the Maritime Command's Lodger Unit, Target Services Group (TSG). TSG supports fleet activities within Jervis Bay and the Eastern Australia Exercise Areas, and provides surface and air targets while maintaining a weapons range on Beecroft Peninsula for Naval Gunfire Support and air bombardment purposes.
