This cache is placed underground, in a long ago abandoned tunnel.
Originally a train tunnel on the South Yorkshire Junction Railway, it was opened for passengers in 1894, however it was not viable and closed for passengers in 1903, shortly after the suicide of a worker from a nearby estate (he laid his neck across the line outside the tunnel).
The line continued to be used for freight up to closure in 1967, when rails and other salvage were taken by the railway salvors and the land largely returned to agriculture. Today there are only bits and pieces of evidence to its former use, scattered throughout the area.
This cache is however, placed right at the spot of an accident, where a young gypsy girl was walking through the tunnel to sell rags to the railway workers.
Legend has it that she saw a train coming and stood in a refuge, however she dropped her rags and when she stooped to pick them up, was struck and killed by the train.
Today, legend says that if you stand in the 3rd refuge and say "Mexborough ragger" 3 times, she will appear!
When I arrived, I saw a toy doll left in a refuge, which may still be there when you attempt the cache...........
Β
You will need to enter this tunnel from the adjacent tarmac roadway,
a distinct trail leads down to the entrance amongst the foliage and trees
- please watch your footing!
A torch and in all probabiliy, wellies are required, tweezers
will also be very useful to retrieve the container and log.
Good luck and enjoy...... dare you say "Mexborough Ragger" three times?
