Geocache Description:

Welcome to Stone Manor of Batavia. Built in 1849.

Enjoy geocaching at this historical landmark. What you are seeking, pandora's box, is protected by two lions. Use caution!

Stone Manor, located at 528 South Batavia Avenue (Route 31), was built by Elijah Shumway Town in 1849.

Judge Samuel Lockwood purchased it in 1859 and, in 1871, sold it to William Coffin, who had the first private bank in Batavia on the property. A bank vault still remains locked in the basement.

Judge Lockwood was also a friend and confidant of Abraham Lincoln. It is rumored that Abraham Lincoln stayed in this home on occasion.

T. W. Snow bought the property, which was later known for many years as the Snow House, in 1906.

Stone Manor is also rumored to have tunnels underneath- part of the underground railroad.

On May 29, 1998, it was acquired by Suicide Prevention Services of America. Stone Manor is now home to this organization. The apartment on the second and third floor are occupied by local tenants. The first floor and part of the second floor are offices and a room for the volunteers of the 24-hour phone hotline.
