About York Station
York railway station opened in 1877 and at the time was the largest railway station in the world. During the Second World War, the building was heavily bombed and so had to be extensively repaired in 1947. It was recently refurbished in 2008-9 without spoiling the historic nature of the station.
Despite York being a small city, York station is one of the most important railway stations in the UK because it lies roughly half way between London and Edinburgh, providing a key railway junction. It is currently operated by East Coast and provides direct rail services to cities such as London, Edinburgh, Derby, Plymouth, and Scarborough.
