Geocache Description:

This is near a stadium in East Moline where football and track meets happen. A little history goes along with this one.

Small magnetic container, BYOP

Dr.E.A. Soule, president of the East Moline park board, conceived the idea of creating a stadium from natural oval valley in the southeast corner of Butterworth Park. Construction began in 1935 with funds obtain by the city from the WPA, a federal program. Through an agreement with the school board, nearby United Township High School (1916 campus razed) used the bowl as an athletic field and began playing football here in 1936. The stadium was completed in 1940, with improvements paid from city and school board funds. For many years, musical festivals, drum and bugle corps competitions, various entertainments, and fireworks were held at the Bowl. In 1973 ownership was transferred from the city to United township High School. Soule Bowl was extensively renovated and rededicated in 1982. The Soule Bowl commemorates Dr. A. E. Soule, the first chairman of the East Moline Park Board and the man whose idea it was to build a stadium in the natural bowl in the Butterworth Park hillside. He then oversaw planning and construction. Constructed under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, Soule Bowl hosted its first game Oct. 17, 1936. Kewanee won, 7-6, over what was then the East Moline High School Hilltoppers. The first home win came a week later, 39- 0, over St. Joseph's of Rock Island. Dr. Soule, active in civic affairs throughout his life, died Aug. 12, 1949, at age 72. My father-in-law Ralph Dean Stephenson helped dig this by hand in 1935. Congates drtmn FTF
