Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Crested Butte, Colorado Walking Tour geocache. Crested Butte is famous for both its history and its architectural character. In 1974 the entire town was designated a National Historic District. Please take a walk through our town and learn a little bit about its mining and town history. It is recommended you walk or bike the cache tour, as parking can be quite hard to come by in high season. Besides, you don't want to drive by all of the history, now do you?

The multi cache is a six stage plus the final location walking/biking cache showing you just a few of the historical buildings in Crested Butte. All of the stages, except the final, are at buildings with historical building plaques. The stages and the final are available 24/7. Since you are in town, there are plenty of restrooms, restaurants, watering holes, art galleries and shopping for your pleasure. The walking tour can be done in an hour, but you can easily spend a leisurely afternoon meandering from stage to stage.
STAGE 1: The posted coordinates bring you to the former Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Stationhouse, built in 1881. It was the lifeline for the town, bringing in needed supplies from Gunnison and hauling coal from the mines. Since 1952, when the mines closed and the last train ran, the building has served as a private residence, a community center, and was the first home of the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum. It currently houses nonprofits. Look above the double window on the second floor. How many rays of sunshine do you see? (Rays are the darker bands.) Rays minus 5 = A. The next stage is N 38 5A.A46 W 106 59.045

STAGE 2: This handsome church was built in the early 1880s. The bell in the tower came from a church in the now deserted boomtown of Irwin. This building is one of the most photographed and painted buildings in town. What year was the bell replaced? 1BC7. The next stage is at N 38 5A.C83 W 106 5B.306

STAGE 3: This building was built in the late 1800s by the patriarch of Crested Butte's oldest Yugoslavian family as a residence for his large family. This house remains one of the finest examples of Crested Butte's early architecture. If the senior patriarch immigrated from Poland, D=7. If he immigrated from Austria-Slovenia, D=0 or if he immigrated from Germany, D=8. Stage 4 is located at N 38 5A.D9C W 106 5B.A4A.

STAGE 4: As you are walking from Stage 3 to stage 4, take a look at the most picturesque building on the right hand corner. You will also pass by the former Marshal's Office. You have now arrived at a former bar which was built around 1900 in the midst of a flourishing saloon district. After sitting abandoned for many years it was restored in the summer of 1976 and converted into a restaurant. Its plush interior recalls an era and lifestyle that was certainly part of western history. By what year was the 2nd story and false front added? The last digit plus 2 equals E. You are doing a great job, just a few more stages left! Stage 5 is at N 38 5A.CBA W 10E 5B DE5.

STAGE 5: If this building is open, please go inside and look around at the historic hardware store merchandise, still on the shelves as when Tony closed the doors, it doesn't cost a dime, however it is $4.00 if you want to take the full tour of the displays. It is certainly worth your time for the walk back in time. It is the home of Colorado's most famous stove and used to be the home of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. What is the address of the building?FF1 Elk Avenue. Now head over to N F8 5A.A44 W CDE 58.BF4.

STAGE 6: Congratulations, you graduated, well, if you graduated prior to 1967 when the High School moved to Gunnison. It remained the elementary to middle school until 1997 when the Community School was built. The Town Offices are housed here now. You are in the plaza honoring longtime Crested Butte public servant Bill Crank. Find the plaque honoring him. His middle initial could be a Roman Numeral and as a Roman Numeral it represents the number G. Sprint to the Final! I hope you kept your notes.
The final is located at N F8 GA.ACD W CDE G8.8G7.

FINAL: You have arrived! I want to thank the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum for providing the background information for this cache.
