Gordon Flowerdew(1885-1918) was born in Billingford England in 1885, he emigrated to Canada in 1903 and homesteaded north of Duck Lake. He moved to British Colombia sometime after 1910 and in 1914 he enlisted as a private in the Lord Strathcona Horse. He was commissioned an officer in 1916 and given command of "C" Squadron in 1918. On March 30th 1918, in the Bois de Moreuil, France, his squadron was ordered to charge two entrenched lines of the enemy, each about 60 soldiers strong with machine guns at their flanks and centre. They attacked the 2 enemy lines, one behind the other and despite app. 70% casualties, they forced the germans to retreat. Lieutenant Gordon Muriel Flowerdew was fatally wounded and was awarded the Victoria Cross Posthumously.
