Private William Johnson Milne (1892-1917) Milne was born near Glasgow Scotland in 1892 and emigrated to Canada in 1910. He worked for 4 years on a farm near Caron until he enlisted at Moose Jaw. Milne was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Vimy Ridge in France. During the attack, Milne saw an enemy machine gun firing on allied troops. Crawling on his hands and knees, he reached the gun and killed the crew. Then noticing another machine gun, he again crawled to the gun and took out another German crew.
Private William Johnson Milne was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously on april 9th 1917. Milne Channel in NE Saskatchewan in named in his honour. Using public donations, the Canadian War Museum purchased his Victoria Cross at an auction in London England.
