Geocache Description:

In honor of the 2014 SLAGA summer picnic event (hosted by Mrs. RGS), I thought I'd put the word 'Picnic' in the title of this cache......but WAIT!...did I misspell a word up there? Hmmmm, you'll have to read on and also find the cache to see if I did. I'm sorry to say, but this cache is a nano at a park - oh my! Don't forget to bring your pen and tweezers and, oh yeah, your forks and spoon and drinks and.......

Etymology is the study of the origin, meaning, and changes through time, of a particular word...in this case "PICNIC.," while Entomology is the scientific study of insects; a branch of arthropodology.

The word "picnic" has it's origins from a 17th century French word 'piquenique.' Etymologist are unsure if the word is actually based on the verb piquer which means 'pick' or 'peck' connected with the rhyming nique meaning "thing of little importance" or just as a nonsense rhyming ending. In any case, the word 'picnic' did not appear in English till 1748. Originally, the term described an individual's contribution to the social event in which he/she was invited - styled as "picnics." Individuals were to provide a dish to the common, shared feast. A related phrase, 'picnic society,' described gatherings in which one was expected to perform/contribute to the success of a social evening. Through the years, the meaning of the word focused on the outdoorsy aspect of such gatherings. Where once, many contributed dishes, nowadays a 'picnic' can also be an intimate outdoor meal shared by two or an event with one cook. "PICNIC" simply refers to a pleasurable, casual meal eaten outdoors, usually in a spot with beautiful landscape such as a park, or beside a lake or nice scenic view and usually in summer.

Now then....what about Entomology? Maybe since 'picnic' involves food outside, those pesty ants, flies, roaches, bees, etc have something to do with it as well. I think the etymologists and entomologists should meet at a picnic and discuss this further.
